2009 Team Updates
Day 1 – We want to give thanks to God for Sonya, Chip, & Rob, the intrepid prayer warriors who met us at the Link parking lot at 6:50am-ish to pray with us before the Journey began.
We departed pretty much on time in adherence to the all important and famous “Tight Schedule”.
Please pray for our mission(s) on this journey: · Volunteer for ongoing reconstruction efforts. · Volunteer for a local New Orleans ministry for the homeless. · Retrieve one of the two Savannah Christian shower units. · Conduct interviews to record testimonies of homeless, missionaries, and residents. · To encourage the saints here in New Orleans.
Thursday went well; we made it to New Orleans in about 11 hours. On the ride over we continued to prepare for the work God has for us here in New Orleans. We shared our testimonies and prepared our interview questions. After arriving in New Orleans at the home of the John & Sydna, we had some delicious red beans and rice. We spent from 6:00pm until 10:30pm with our hosts, missionaries from different organizations, a church planter for Hope Christian Church and his family. We prayed for the Church planter, Eric Fellinger, and his family.
Also we conducted three interviews with missionaries, all yielding great insight to the situation here in New Orleans and encouraging testimony to our Great God and Savior Jesus Christ. Please pray for our mission here, and our families back at home. God Bless, Dan Popham
Day 2 – Today, Friday May 29, the OGH Team had a hard day at work taking part in the restoration of a local New Orleans resident’s home.
Working with Building Better Communities project leaders Kyle and Brad, we primed the entire interior of the house. Tomorrow we will begin to apply the finishing paint over the primer.
Additionally, part of our crew constructed a small fence that will one day conceal the houses air conditioning condensing unit from would-be thieves. We also conducted three interviews. One of the persons interviewed was a pastor/missionary who grew in the church started by Jeff Vines in Zimbabwe. This pastor has previously attended leadership seminars at Savannah Christian Church, but this weekend he is leading a conference to raise up Christian leaders in the New Orleans area.
The other two interviews were with New Orleans residents who evacuated during hurricane Katrina and are still in the process of rebuilding their homes and lives. These two interviews shared a common discontent for dishonesty and fraud by contractors who have taken advantage of homeowners who have been trying to rebuild their homes.
After working all day, we partook in some local New Orleans food and returned to our place of board for a quiet evening. Well that is all for today. We echo the same simple prayer requests, prayer for our mission here and our families back home. In Christ, Dan Popham
